Door County Weekend, Oct. 22 - 23, 2010
Looking for a fun way to put some miles on your Porsche before winter storage? Join fellow PCA-Milwaukee Region members on a long-weekend trip to Door County. We will meet midmorning on Friday, Oct. 22 at a coffee house in historic Cedarburg for caffeine and croissants before departing for Door County. We will make a pit stop (for us – not the cars) at a convenient rest area on the way. We will arrive in Sturgeon Bay just in time for a lunch stop at the Inn at Cedar Crossing. The inn offers great salads, sandwiches, and hot soups!
After lunch we will continue north and arrive at check-in time at our B&B for the weekend, the White Gull Inn.
Lodging information
The deadline has passed to ensure a spot at the White Gull Inn, the lodging location that tour hosts Al and Ellyn Wagner will be at but you may still be able to reserve a room there. You may also stay at any other location in the area and still be part of this great weekend with other members of the region. For your convenience, the White Gull Inn phone number is 888-364-9542. You are not obligated to stay at the White Gull. If you prefer to find other lodging, you’re welcome to do so and still enjoy the weekend with the group.
When you decide to commit for the weekend, you must do two things: 1) Make your lodging reservations on your own at whatever establishment you prefer. The tour leaders are staying at the White Gull Inn, 1-888-364-9542 and 2) e-mail PCA trip planners, Al & Ellyn Wagner (alan.wagner@wi.rr.com), to get on their list so you will receive updates as trip details are finalized. Even if you are staying elsewhere in the area, please be sure to let the Wagner's know you are going to be participating in this event.
Schedule
After checking into the inn or your lodging choice, you will have time to relax, walk the many shops and galleries in Fish Creek, or, if your Porsche did not get enough exercise on the drive up, you can find some back roads to drive on your own. Just be sure to return to the inn in time to enjoy one of its famous fish boils. If there is a chill in the air, you can take it off by edging close to the fish-boil fire with a glass of wine or beer in hand. In addition to boiled whitefish, red potatoes, onions, coleslaw, and bread, perhaps the most enjoyable part of the meal – freshly made Door County cherry pie – is featured for dessert. The inn is always willing to add a scoop of ice cream!
Included in the package cost for the White Gull Inn will be scrumptious full breakfasts on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. A little later on Saturday morning, we plan to drive to a Door County winery for a detailed tour, and have lunch served there, along with a sampling of their wares. Details are still being worked out – stay tuned for more information.
Saturday afternoon will be free time. There are a lot of options at your disposal: Go for a hike, or rent a bicycle and ride the trails in Peninsula State Park, take in more shops and galleries, or just relax. Most club members will reconvene for dinner at a restaurant selected for excellent food and drink, over which the afternoon’s experiences can be shared. If you prefer a more-intimate dinner on your own, a list of candidate restaurants will be available at your request.
After a leisurely breakfast and relaxing on Sunday morning, those who wish to caravan back to southeast Wisconsin will depart for the trip home. If you didn’t get your full complement of hiking, biking, gallery touring, or shopping, feel free to hang around and drive back on your own.
A note about the White Gull Inn: The inn features a wide range of accommodations. They include both small and large rooms in the main inn building, and multiple bedrooms in adjacent and nearby cottages. Groups of two or more couples may be interested in the latter arrangement. Check out the inn’s Web site www.whitegullinn.com for accommodation options. Remember, to be assured of a room at the White Gull Inn, be sure to make your reservations by Feb. 28; be sure to tell them you want a room in the block of rooms being held for the Porsche Club; and be sure to inform the Wagner’s you plan to join them.
You are responsible for making your own reservations for accommodations regardless of where you stay. If you prefer to stay at a place other than the White Gull Inn, feel free to make reservations at the place of your choice. Be sure though, to inform the Wagner’s so that you can be kept informed as other details of the weekend are finalized.
Trip costs: The cost of accommodations is your responsibility, as is the cost of all meals. Keep in mind that the White Gull Inn cost includes two full hot breakfasts for two on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. There will likely be an additional per-person cost for the Saturday winery tour and lunch. Those details are still being developed.
