Tech session defines what DE is and what it isn't

by Rick Zinda, co-chair, Tech Session Committee

Spring is here and the thoughts of many Porsche owners turn to redlines and apexes. On April 10, PCA Milwaukee and CS Motorsports hosted a driver’s education tech session. The idea of these sessions is to help those owners understand just what “DE” is.

The session started with Region President Don Kiepert welcoming attendees and letting them know what the club has organized in the coming months for everyone to enjoy. Then club member and avid DE driver and the region’s chief driving instructor Ron Pace took front and center explain what DE is and is not and answer questions.

Most important DE is NOT a race. It IS a way to better understand and control your Porsche no matter what model or age (that goes for the driver too). Ron talked about the correct way to enter and exit different corners and curves, the definition of the flags you will see as you drive the courses and various braking techniques. The short session, packed with information, hopefully whet the appetite for some to try driver education this year for the first time.

After Ron had filled our brains to capacity with driving data; Chris Schuh, owner of CS Motorsports, a shop that specializes in engine building for the street or the track, talked a bit about car preparation. This part went quickly as most of the things you do to get ready for the track are things you should be doing to get ready for the road. Things like checking tire pressure, looking for and fixing leaks, fixing broken suspension parts and clearing your car of loose objects.

Thank to Ron for giving us a taste of what DE is all about and especially to Chris Schuh for letting us invade CS Motorsports and for providing a wonderful brunch and great conversation.
