Spots filling up for Driftless region tour
Note: As of July 25, we have 10 cars registered for this tour. That means we’re halfway to our maximum of 20 cars. You are encouraged to register sooner, rather than later, to avoid being disappointed.
For the last three years, PCA-Milwaukee Region members have participated in Great River Road Tours (Parts I, II, and III). On those tours we took in a wide variety of points of interest ranging from a couple of wineries (Villa Bellezza and Botham Vineyards), the National Eagle Center, the International Crane Foundation, the Otto Leopold Center, State Historic Sites including Pendarvis and Villa Louis. But if you asked participants to name the highlight of those tours, their most-probable response would be, “the roads!” We got off the Great River Roads and took in the winding roads in the hilly Driftless Area (the SW part of our state which was not bulldozed flat by glaciers) favored by our Porsches, and their drivers.
Oct. 13—Oct. 15
This year, we’re going back to the Driftless Area, and the primary focus will be the roads! Secondary attractions will be the color of the autumn leaves, social time with new and long-time Porsche friends, and good food. If this sounds like fun to you, please mark your calendars for Friday, Oct. 13, through Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017.
Of the three hotels visited on past River Road Tours, the favorite was clearly the newly renovated Radisson Hotel in LaCrosse. The real reason the Radisson was a favorite might have been that the hotel was within an easy walk of a great ice cream shop! Nearly all participants somehow ended up there after dinner. The Radisson is holding a block of 20 rooms for our group. Ten rooms will offer a city view, while the other ten will look out over the Mississippi River. The “City View” rooms feature 1 king-size bed for a rate of $149 per night (plus tax). The “River-View” rooms feature 2 queen-size beds for a rate of $159 per night (plus tax). The hotel’s deadline is midnight, Friday, Sept. 8, 2017. At that time, any un-booked rooms in our block will become available to the general public.
To make reservations at the Radisson, please call 608-784-6680. Be sure to state that you are with the PCA-Milwaukee Region group, to draw from the block of rooms reserved for us.
On Friday morning, we’ll meet at a convenient starting point near Madison. Detailed information regarding trip specifics will be provided to registered participants. For Friday’s lunch, we’ll stop at a restaurant on our way. Friday evening we’ll enjoy a social hour in the Three Rivers Lounge before having a group dinner in the adjacent restaurant. Both will afford opportunities to “talk Porsche” with fellow participants.
Saturday morning, breakfast will be an on-your-own event. Most will likely choose to have breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant, but there is no obligation to do so. Whatever you breakfast preference; you’ll need to plan for a 9:30 AM departure for another drive on more magnificent Driftless Area roads. Our Saturday turn-around point will be a popular restaurant featuring comfort food and a wide variety of delectable pies. Lunch, and the return drive to LaCrosse, will be on-your-own events.
Saturday evening, we’ll offer two choices for dinner: A fine-dining option, and a more-casual option. We’re planning to split up to do both, so you’ll need to indicate your preference (see lin to form below) so we can make proper arrangements.
The fine-dining option will be the Waterfront Restaurant & Tavern, just a block down the street from the Radisson.
Click on the Waterfront’s website: www.thewaterfrontlacrosse.com. Their menus highlight seasonal American cuisine that includes USDA Prime beef and fresh day-boat seafood. With a focus on the freshest foods of each season, their culinary team allows the ingredients to speak for themselves.
The casual-dining option will be Piggy’s Restaurant & Blues Lounge, also within walking distance of the Radisson. Check out their website at www.piggys.com, then click on Lounge and Menu. Piggy’s offers a variety of appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads, and desserts.
Sunday’s schedule will be entirely flexible, with no planned events. Participants may elect to have breakfast at the hotel, or to go to one of the many restaurants within walking distance of the Radisson. There will be no planned group return drive on Sunday. Participants may elect to caravan home with friends, or perhaps linger in LaCrosse and drive home on their own.
